Steve SchiripaGet your dose of humor and fatherly advice as funny man Steve Schiripa takes center stage at the Writers in the Loft program hosted by the Music Hall on Friday, June 7, 2013 from 7:00 in the evening onwards.

He will be offering the audience a hilarious take on raising kids through his book Big Daddy’s Rules: Raising Daughters Is Tougher Than I Look.

Schiripa is an American stand-up comedian, actor, producer, voice artist, and author. He is best known for playing Bobby Baccalieri on The Sopranos. Schirripa is currently the host of Nothing Personal, a regular cast member of ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and the voice of Roberto in the Open Season franchise. He has also done commercials for Lamisal and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Tickets for the show are sold at $36 for members and $39 for non-members. This includes a reserved seat, a copy of the book, a bar beverage, access to the author presentation and Q & A, as well as a book signing and meet and greet.

People Skills at the Press RoomGet ready to rock out and have a good time as the band “People Skills” takes center stage at the Press Room on May 31, 2013 at 9:00 in the evening.

“People Skills” is the latest and rockingest assembly of a dedicated and visionary collective of musicians on the Seacoast of New Hampshire. For the last decade, singer guitarist Chelsea Paolini, her brother and drummer Andrew Paolini, and bassist Greg Baldi have been writing and playing songs together in countless projects ranging countless genres, ever-honing their communication, tightness, and ease as a band. They navigate through complex melodies and riffs holding hands, smiling, joking, and landing perfectly in time.

Historic Theater Film Screening: Room 237

Room 237The Music hall is inviting everyone to catch the screening of “Room 237” at the Historic Theater on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 7:00 in the evening.

“Room 237” is a 2012 American documentary film directed by Rodney Ascher about perceived meanings in Stanley Kubrick’s film “The Shining”. The film includes footage from The Shining, and other Kubrick films, along with discussions by a number of Kubrick enthusiasts. The film has nine segments, each focusing on different elements within the film which “may reveal hidden clues and hint at a bigger thematic oeuvre.” The film was produced by Tim Kirk.

The film stars as themselves Bill Blakemore, Geoffrey Cocks, Juli Kearns, John Fell Ryan, and Jay Weidner. Buffy Visick appears as the VHS enthusiast.

Tickets are sold for $9 for adults and $7 for seniors ages 60 and above, students, and members of the military.

“No” Film Screening at the Historic Theater

NoGet ready for a riveting take on politics and don’t miss the screening of the film “No” at the Historic Theater on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at 7:00 in the evening.

“No” is a 2012 Chilean drama film directed by Pablo Larraín. The film is based on the unpublished play El Plebiscito, written by Antonio Skármeta. Mexican actor Gael García Bernal plays René, an in-demand advertising man working in Chile in the late 1980s. The historical moment the film captures is when advertising tactics came to be widely used in political campaigns. The campaign in question was the historic 1988 plebiscite of the Chilean citizenry over whether General Augusto Pinochet should have another 8-year term as President.

Caswell Sisters Live at the Press Room

Sara and Rachel CaswellMusicians extraordinaire Sara and Rachel Caswell together with Mark Shilansky, Keala Kaumeheiwa, and Les Harris Jr. will be performaning live at the Press Room on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 6:00 pm.

Rachel and Sara co-lead the Caswell Sisters Quintet and have made such notable appearances as a weeklong After-Hours engagement at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, and an enthusiastically-received set on the opening night concert of the inaugural 2010 Jazz Education Network (JEN) Conference in St. Louis. Their debut Caswell Sisters album “Alive in the Singing Air “ featuring jazz pianist Fred Hersch will be released in early 2013 by Turtle Ridge Records.

Wynton Marsalis to perform in Portsmouth

The world-renowned trumpeter is traveling across to United States for an anniversary tour. He will perform—alongside a jazz orchestra—in more than 28 cities, bringing their repertoire of Blue Note Records selections with them.

The band will also perform music of many popular artists, including John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis, and many more.

Ticket prices start at $30 and can be purchased online, over the phone, or on the booth.

Michael Tarbox Live at the Press RoomThe Press Room is inviting everyone for a night of musical bliss as Michael Tarbox takes center stage on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 9:00 pm.

Tarbox is an American songwriter, guitarist and singer who perform solo and with the Boston-based group The Tarbox Ramblers, a group he formed in 1994. In 2010 he released his first solo album, My Primitive Joy that was produced by Scott McEwen at The Fry Pharmacy Studio in Old Hickory, TN, Its spare arrangements, acoustic sound and lyrical approach stand in contrast to The Tarbox Ramblers’ aggressive amplified sound. A second solo album is slated for release in 2012.

This show is for people ages 21 and above. Tickets are sold for $5. Doors open at 8:00 pm.

2013 Women’s Clothing Swap

2013 Women's Clothing SwapThe Portsmouth Public Library is inviting everyone to be a part of the 4th Annual Women’s Clothing Swap happening on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at PPL from10:00 in the morning to 2:00 in the afternoon.

This event is an amalgamation of spring cleaning and helping those who are in need. Participants are asked to bring bags of gently used but clean women’s clothes and accessories which they can swap for other items from other partakers. It allows women from the community to clean out their closets as well as to find items that they can add to their own wardrobes.

The Clothing Swap is open to all; you don’t need to be a member of the Library to join.

Don’t miss this one of a kind event and visit the Levenson Community Room to join!

The Music Hall unveils its 22nd Annual Kitchen Tour

The Music HallFamilies will be happy to know that The Music Hall is hosting its 22nd Annual Kitchen Tour.

The tour, which is known as The Music Hall’s annual spring benefit, will showcase homes in Portsmouth’s Mill Pond areas. These home designs are characterized by sustainability and local history.

The kitchens will be the centerpieces of the tour.

The tour takes place on May 4, 2013. Tickets are priced at $25 for those who purchased in advance, $23 for members, and $27 for people who will buy them upon joining the tour.

Seniors’ Book Talk

Portsmouth Public Library Book Talks for SeniorsThe Portsmouth Public Library is inviting everyone to be a part of the “Book Talk for Seniors” happening on May 20, 2013 at the Wentworth Home at 2:15 in the afternoon.

For the event, librarians will be visiting local senior centers, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes and will be bringing with them topical, specially selected books of interest. For forty to fifty minutes, discussions will take place about the synopsis of each book, its basic synopsis (guaranteed to be spoiler free!), and where the action takes place in every piece of literature available for that day. Selections will also be read aloud so that each participant will have an idea of how each book is written. To ensure active participation, residents are urged to have conversations about each book.

Books are available in large and regular print, in CDs and even in DVDs and may be checked out by the residents.
