An insensitive tweet resonated throughout the World Wide Web during the 85th Academy Awards.
It started with a tweet from someone at The Onion: “Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c**t, right?” Within an hour, thousands of angered Twitter subscribers responded to the tweet, and it was—eventually—taken down.
In this example, we see the pendulum of social media. It can swing negatively and positively. Giving subscribers the freedom to post what they want can lead to some controversial statements. On the other hand, the system regulates itself—meaning, people responded to the tweet quickly and forced the uploader to remove it.
As of press time, Twitter declined to comment on the issue. As for The Onion, its CEO issued a formal apology for the tweet.
