Rebecca Marino, a 22-year-old professional tennis player, has announced that she’ll be retiring due to an on-going bout with depression which was inflated by cyberbullying.
“Social media has also taken its toll on me,” said the Canadian in a press statement. Marino said that she received social media messages from hecklers, telling her to “go die” and “go burn in hell.”
Based on her statement, some of these social media attacks were sent by gamblers—who lost money betting on her in tournaments. Marino says she’s no longer “willing to sacrifice happiness to play tennis.”
Marino had a career record of 150-107 and was ranked no. 38 in the world in 2011. She also competed in numerous major tourneys, including the French Open and Wimbledon.
